# Quickstart

> Connect to the live trade stream.

## Before you connect

1. [Create an account](https://rungst.com/signup) and verify your email. New accounts start on Free, which does not include WebSocket access.
2. Obtain a paid plan and have the public IP address of the machine running your client registered for stream access. Paid plan selection in the dashboard is currently marked **Coming soon**.
3. Choose a case-sensitive, base58-encoded Solana trader or token mint address.

The stream authorizes the public IP used by your client, not your dashboard session or wallet key. See [Connection and access](https://docs.rungst.com/websocket/connection.md).

## Subscribe

Connect to `wss://api.rungst.com/v1/` and send a JSON text command after the socket opens. Replace the example address with the trader you want to follow.

```js theme={null}
const ws = new WebSocket("wss://api.rungst.com/v1/");
ws.onopen = () => ws.send(JSON.stringify({
  action: "subscribe",
  trader: "5mEKrpHiDQcNm8rHLEoVQo5FsGPZwagrfyPKKZYTKTfC"
}));
ws.onmessage = (event) => console.log(JSON.parse(event.data));
ws.onerror = (error) => console.error(error);
```

The server responds with a `subscribed` message and a subscription ID, then sends matching trades as they occur. A successful subscription may remain quiet if no matching trades occur. See [Subscriptions](https://docs.rungst.com/websocket/subscriptions.md) for mint filters and unsubscribe commands.

If the connection fails, check the URL's trailing slash, your plan, and the public IP of the machine running the client. Browser WebSocket APIs do not expose the HTTP response body from a failed handshake.
